I took this original character from concept to finished product over the course of a year, exploring methods of creating fully animatable articulated models. I modeled him in Blender and Zbrush, alternating between the two, then separated all of his component pieces and modeled custom joints to allow a complete range of motion. I then taught myself to use a resin printer and a filament printer to produce a series of test pieces, modifying my design to correct any errors in assembly and motion that occurred. I tooled the final model to fit my requirements, strung wire through the body to solidify the connections between pieces, and painted it. This model is free-standing and fully articulable, but the pieces fit together stiffly enough to hold positions.
